There is nothing more refreshing when traveling then to step foot off a plane, out of a taxi, van or bus, etc. and be welcomed with a “Welcome Drink“. Whether it is a cold young coconut in Bali, Indonesia or Mexico aka “Coco Frio”, or it is a fresh squeezed juice at your luxury hotel in Costa Rica, a glass of prosecco when you arrive on a Viking River Cruise or a tropical shot with a splash of jalepeño in Lanai, Hawaii, any and all will do.
A welcome drink is one of the best things you can offer me once I arrive somewhere and I have been traveling for a bit. Well, that and a nice hot or cold face cloth depending on the temperature and climate.
While visiting South Africa for the first time my group flew an hour into the bush of Kruger National Park from Johannesburg to spend 3 nights at the And Beyond Ngala Game Reserve. As we pulled up at the lodge for the first time and every time for the next three days we were welcomed with some tasty welcome drinks. A delicious fruit juice, lemonade or pimms served and waiting just for us.
We were either greeted into the welcoming arms of “Mama” the properties head manager who was like a second mother to many or by the warm smile of Given, one of the greatest people at the lodge each time we arrived. That mixed with the welcome drink made our stay “that” much better and almost gave it that touch of home that you often miss when traveling. Just the idea that someone is thinking and planning things for you while you are gone gives you that warm fuzzy feeling all over. It also really makes you value how great of a place Ngala really is.
Have you ever been greeted by a welcome drink? Where and what was your favorite?
